A 24-year-old American tourist caused a brief closure of the baggage claim and parts of the arrivals hall at Vienna International Airport on Monday after bringing a World War II in her bag. Police belief the tourist found the war relic while hiking the day before in rocky terrain and took the seemingly harmless relic as a souvenir to bring home. When she presented the relic to customs officials at the airport on Monday, the officials immediately contacted the police. This is when she learned that she was carrying a live WWII grenade instead of a harmless relic. The grenade was disposed of by the defusing service. While the grenade was being removed, the airport had to close the baggage hall and parts of the arrivals hall for roughly 15 minutes. Police say that flight operations and passenger safety were never impaired and no flights were delayed. Police posted on their Facebook page what to do when finding supposed war relics or ammunition.
